Things to Know Before You Go

Weather & Best Time to Visit

Austin has a warm climate for most of the year, with hot summers and mild winters. Spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) are the best times to visit, offering pleasant temperatures and outdoor-friendly weather. Summers can get very hot, often above 35°C, so plan indoor activities during peak afternoon hours. Rainfall is moderate but can be unpredictable in spring. Always carry sunscreen, sunglasses, and stay hydrated while exploring the city.

Car-Friendly City

Austin is largely a car-friendly city, and having a vehicle makes it much easier to explore different neighborhoods and attractions. Public transport exists but is limited compared to larger metro cities. Renting a car is highly recommended, especially if you plan to visit spots outside downtown. Traffic can get heavy during rush hours, so plan accordingly. Parking is widely available, but downtown areas may have paid parking zones.

Live Music Capital

Known as the “Live Music Capital of the World,” Austin offers an incredible music scene across genres. From street performances to major venues, live music is part of daily life here. Don’t miss famous events like South by Southwest and Austin City Limits Music Festival. Bars, cafes, and even small venues host live performances every night. It’s a great city for discovering new artists and enjoying vibrant nightlife.

Food & Tipping Culture

Austin is famous for its diverse food scene, especially BBQ and Tex-Mex cuisine. You’ll find everything from food trucks to upscale dining experiences. Tipping is customary in restaurants, typically 15–20% of the bill. Many places also include service charges, so check your receipt before tipping extra. Food trucks are extremely popular and offer delicious, affordable options across the city.
